Hi\u00a0Andrew, what got you into improv in the first place?<\/h3>\n

I trained as an actor and always found the improvised scenes to be more alive, and improv exercises left more room for creative play and silliness – which is closer to my sensibilities. So once I finished the course I went hunting for improv meet-ups online and the breadcrumb\u00a0trail led me to Hoopla.<\/p>\n

What do you think\u00a0makes a good improviser?<\/h3>\n

Someone who listens intently and is always ready to yield, but strong and committed\u00a0when making offers. Above all, they make sure they’re having fun – which is what it feels like when you’re creatively free.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite exercise and why?<\/h3>\n

‘You Look, You Seem<\/strong>‘<\/em>. It crystallises the notion that\u00a0The Scene Is In The Eyes Of Your Partner<\/em>. You are constantly making endowments based on\u00a0close observation of your scene partner, they in turn run with your endowments to generate more content for you, do this for a few minutes then switch. It’s very simple and very easy but\u00a0becomes\u00a0a two-person\u00a0treadmill of\u00a0incredible\u00a0creativity and energy which seemingly takes off on its own.\u00a0Afterwards, you’re a bit ‘what just happened?’ while\u00a0the class\u00a0has just witnessed a wonderfully bizarre but emotionally truthful rollercoaster.<\/p>\n

Who are your favourite improv acts?<\/h3>\n

Parallelogramophonograph,\u00a0Dummy,\u00a0The\u00a0Improvised Shakespeare Company.<\/p>\n

What does improv training help you within the real world?<\/h3>\n

It builds\u00a0muscles of trusting your intuition, confidence on the fly, and never getting too precious. It frees you from your own head!<\/p>\n

What advice would you give to people wanting to get into improv?<\/h3>\n

Trust that intuition. Jump in.\u00a0It taps into a deep need we have to live in the moment and create, free from judgement.\u00a0I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t massively\u00a0benefit from improv.<\/p>\n
